The Indian government has launched a new “Cell Broadcast Alert System” to send disaster and emergency warnings directly to people’s mobile phones in real time. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the system with support from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) under the guidance of Union Minister Amit Shah. The system is designed to quickly warn people about disasters, emergencies, and public safety issues. It can send alerts directly to mobile phones with a loud beep sound and a flashing message. The government successfully tested the system across India. During the test, many mobile users received emergency alert messages on their phones.
Officials said the system will help spread important information quickly during natural disasters, bad weather, and other emergencies. The government said the alerts are being tested through flash SMS messages sent by the NDMA. One sample message said: “NDMA will test Cell Broadcast Alerts on May 2, 2026, in your area. On receiving the message on your mobile phone, no action is required. Please do not panic.”
The alerts are sent through an Indian-made system called “SACHET,” developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). The technology follows international standards recommended by the International Telecommunication Union. The system can warn people about disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, lightning strikes, gas leaks, chemical accidents, and other emergencies in specific areas. The government has already carried out several tests to check the system’s reliability before launching it nationwide. After testing is completed, the system is expected to work across India and send emergency alerts in multiple Indian languages to all mobile phones.
